Cooking School

Due to Covid-19 we are currently not able to offer cooking classes. Katie & Kathy hope to offer classes again in 2021!

Have you ever wanted to go to cooking school? Katie has put together different workshops to help you become a better cook. Each workshop will tackle an essential cooking topic and explain what you should know. We will prepare recipes that focus on each topic to put your new knowledge to use. Each class in this series can be taken in any order or skipped all together. Whether you want to refresh your skills or are new to the kitchen and need the basics, come and learn to cook, By The Spoonful.

Let's get cooking! Prepare for a different class experience. Here at BTS we really believe in bringing back the art that is cooking. Katie, By the Spoonful's owner goal is to bring new ingredients and flavors to your kitchen, show you that cooking can be simple and help participants “build their own culinary intuition." Classes are a casual experience that combines instructor demonstrations with hands-on class participation. Everyone will walk out the door with new recipes and great tips and techniques to use at home and great coupons to shop BTS for the ingredients you’ll need to recreate the dining experience at home.  We will be adding classes regularly, so please check back often as we will be announcing all-new class here.

I left my position as a retail chef at a large grocery store chain to become a small business owner in my home area of Northeast Iowa. I studied Culinary Science and have knowledge in various food & nutrition areas. I have 8+ years experience in live cooking demos, cooking classes and encouraging others to cook more at home. In 2013 I took those skills to open By The Spoonful , a food market & espresso bar. With my store I focus primarily on regionally made products. In my cooking classes I do the same with the additional focus on fresh and authentic.

Whether you’re a seasoned cook or just learning your way around the kitchen, we'll show you how to have fun while preparing fabulous food with confidence and ease. Explore our fresh thinking on old favorites, or try something completely different. With special guests, theme classes and fresh seasonal ideas, we know you’ll want to come back again and again. Classes are informal and intimate, taught demonstration-style and hands-on in our basement kitchen.  Currently, Katie offers weekly and private cooking classes for the gourmet to the everyday plate. Great cooking is about more than recipes—it’s about techniques. In classes, you’ll work together with other students in a fun, hands-on environment.
